3 Key Considerations when Purchasing a Sofa

SHARE THIS:

Your sofa is among your most frequently used pieces of furniture – make sure you purchase the right one! There are so many options on the market today, but we are here to help. At Reid’s Fine Furnishings, we use our extensive design knowledge to help customers find the perfect furniture to suite their needs. Here are 3 things we recommend considering before purchasing a sofa:

1. Standard sizes vs. a sectional

There are numerous sofa sizes available today, with options for varying depths, widths, and configurations. Standard 3-seat sofas range from 72 – 90 inches long, with apartment sofas and 2-seat Loveseats as shorter options. Sectionals, on the other hand, occupy more floor space and come in an array of sizes, modular pieces, and arrangements. When choosing between a standard sofa or a sectional, consider the footprint it will occupy in your overall space – you want to ensure the sofa will not be too large or block high-traffic areas within the room. Next, evaluate how many seats your sofa must accommodate. For example, a family of four wouldn’t be able to fit on most standard sofas. A sectional can fit many more people, so they are great options for large families or homeowners who love entertaining. Don’t have room for a sectional? No problem! Pairing a standard sofa with a couple accent chairs is a great option if you don’t have enough room for a large piece of upholstery.

2. Stationary vs. reclining

At Reid’s Fine Furnishings, we offer both stationary and motion sofas; however, reclining might not be necessary in every space. A formal sitting room that is only used occasionally likely won’t benefit from a reclining piece. Instead, save some money to invest in other areas and stick to stationary designs for lightly used sofas. If you are furnishing a TV room, however, many customers want the flexibility to recline in their sofa while sitting for long periods of time enjoying a movie. We offer a large variety fantastic, customizable sofas that have stationary and motion options, so we can ensure your furniture is tailored to your unique needs and budget.

3. Fabric vs. leather

Lastly, we recommend considering whether fabric or leather is the best option for your space. Aesthetics and lifestyle are both key in determining which is best for you. Fabric tends to have a more casual, cozy feel, and is typically more cost efficient. Alternatively, leather is more expensive, but it is also more durable and often elevates the style of a room. It should also be noted that leather can be repaired, but torn fabric is often unfixable. Our design team can help you decide which material is best for the look and function of your space.
