Decorating should be a fun process of making a space your own. But for many, shopping for decor can feel overwhelming – and “decision paralysis” can become a real obstacle! If you find yourself unsure how to accessorize your space, we are here to help. Here are a few of our favorite tips to help you get un-stuck and creative a space that you love:
1. Find a variety of pieces, but keep your design style in mind.
This may seem like a no-brainer, but it could be more of an issue than you realize. How many times have you gone shopping and purchased several items that you loved, only to come home and realize they don’t compliment your space. When selecting decor pieces, it is important to consider your home’s color palette and design themes. For example, you might love that colorful, sculptural floor lamp – but it probably isn’t the best choice if your space is traditional and understated. Look for pieces that lend themselves to your home’s unique style and colors. Additionally, try to keep a list of themes that you are looking for when shopping. For example, if you have a country farmhouse style, look for pieces inspired by nature and pastural subject matter.
Another common shopping mistake is purchasing too many of the same kind of pieces. If you find yourself only buying wall decor, you’ll end up with crowded walls and nothing to adorn your shelves or tables. Strive to collect a variety of pieces that can be placed on walls, shelves, or even set on the floor.
2. When in doubt, use the rule of 3’s.
Have you ever placed a piece of decor, only for it to feel out-of-place for some reason? Sticking to the “Rule of 3’s” might solve the issue. Items often look more grounded and styled when displayed in groups of 3 – particularly when the items in the group vary in scale. For example, a lonely vase on a table might feel bare, but a set of 3 complimentary vases of different sizes feels like a centerpiece. You can also mix an match the types of items in these groups. For example, a gallery wall with a grouping of mirrors, paintings and family photos adds interest and variety to a space.
3. Don’t forget the rug!
If you’ve decorated your space and things still have that “unfinished” feeling, it might be helpful to look down at your floors. If you don’t have a rug for your space (or even if you have a rug, but it’s not the correct size), the room will likely feel awkward and undefined. Incorporating rugs brings color and texture into your space, while also grounding your furniture and making the layout of the room feel purposeful.
