Rugs are the foundation of your interiors. The right one will elevate the entire space; but the wrong one could impair the room’s look and function. But don’t worry – we are here to help! At Reid’s Fine Furnishings, our knowledgeable team can help you choose the right rug for every space in your home! Here are three considerations to help you get started with finding the right rug:
1. Determine the size you need
This may seem like a no-brainer, but many people buy rugs that are either too small or too large for their space. To determine the best size, you must first consider the layout and any furniture that occupy the room. The rug should have enough room to ground all the furniture within the space. As a general rule, all furniture should either completely fit on the rug (with enough space to still have several inches free around the rug’s edges), or all furnishings should have just their front two legs sitting on the rug with their back half sitting on the bare floor. Be mindful of allowing enough space for walking paths around your furniture to prevent things from feeling crowded. If the rug will be placed beneath a dining table and chairs, the rug should be large enough to allow you to pull chairs away from the table without moving them off the rug. Generally, this means having at least one foot of free rug space around your dining set.
2. Consider what pile height is best for the space
Pile height refers to the length of the rug’s fibers, measured from its backing to the top surface. A high-pile rug will feel cushiony and soft – a great feature for bedrooms, nurseries, or other spaces that you want to feel cozy. The downside to high-pile rugs is that they trap more dust and dirt and may be harder to clean. Low pile rugs are less cushioned, but they are more low maintenance and easier to clean. Low-pile rugs are best in high-traffic areas, or places where chairs are being scooted back and forth, like in your dining room or under your office desk and chair. When choosing a pile height, be sure to consider the function of the room and the lifestyle of your family.
3. Choose styles and colors that complement the room
Finally, be sure to select a rug that visually complements the style of your space. The colors and the pattern of the rug must both be considered. For example, an abstract, modern rug might have the right colors for the space but could still look out of place in a room full of traditional furniture and antiques. At Reid’s Fine Furnishings, we carry a vast array of quality rugs in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and patterns so that we can find the perfect piece for any customer!
