Reid’s Fine Furnishings is pleased to announce the arrival of Stickley’s Walnut Grove collection of modern, thoughtfully crafted pieces to its showrooms in Roanoke and Forest.

Beautifully constructed of solid American black walnut, this furniture is designed to make you feel as if it were handmade just for your home. A transparent finish reveals the grain’s beauty and complexity, while contours are given room to breathe. A minimalist design approach incorporates air to create a floating lightness.

Appealing to your unique taste, the Walnut Grove Collection intersperses modern lines with flashes of sophisticated handwork that showcase the artistry of the furniture maker. Natural variations in the wood grain and a deepening of color over time further add to the individual beauty of each piece. You’ll appreciate walnut’s unique nature in every bit of the wood’s grain patterns, swirls and knots.

For holidays, dinner parties or weeknight meals with family and friends, the Walnut Grove dining room collection offers timeless style. Rectangular and round tables combine simple architectural flair with functional design, expandable leaves to welcome guests for special occasions.

Walnut Grove’s occasional tables incorporate offset ellipses to create charm and stability in each piece. Exposed pin joints display time-honored woodworking techniques while optional stone tops add to the wood’s natural beauty.

Airy, light, and timeless. This visually rich collection blends it all, to bring contemporary craftsmanship to your home. For more information or to experience Stickley’s Walnut Grove collection for yourself, call or visit Reid’s showroom in Roanoke or Forest.

Selecting the Right Size Rug for Your Space

SHARE THIS:

It’s not rocket science, but there is a bit of a science to picking the right size rug for your space.

Selecting the right size area rug can be the difference between bringing the elements of a room together or making it look like it was thrown together haphazardly. (Hint: You want to be in the former category.)

Choosing the appropriate size depends on two important factors: the dimensions of the room and the furniture paired with the rug.

The rug can be positioned either entirely or partially under the furniture. It should never float alone inside the furniture grouping. This is particularly relevant for living rooms. Do you want the rug to be under all legs of the couch and chairs, or just the front legs?

Lia Melder, interior designer for Reid’s Fine Furnishings’ Forest location, has rug-sizing philosophies for various rooms of the house. “For a living room, you want the rug to define the space and ground all of the furniture. What you do with one furniture piece should be done with all pieces, so if only the front legs of the sofa are on the rug, then only the front legs of any other sofas or chairs should be on,” she said. “If the entire piece is on the rug, all pieces should be entirely on the rug.”

Lia has some other considerations to make in other rooms of the house, as well.

For safety and comfort’s sake, you don’t want the dining room chairs to be on uneven surfaces. That means opt for the larger rug.

“You want the rug large enough that when chairs are pulled back to get in and out they stay fully on the rug. Generally, that means the rug needs to be at least 2 feet larger than the table all the way around,” she said.

“For a bedroom, you want the sides of the bed where your feet are going to hit the floor when you get up in the morning to be covered, and the area at the foot of the bed should be covered as well. This can be accomplished with one large rug, or a combination of smaller rugs, depending on what works best for the layout of the room.”

There are always exceptions to these rules, however, so if you are still unsure of what size area rug you need, that’s okay! Visit our Roanoke or Forest showrooms today so one of our designers can help you find the perfect rug for your home.

Stickley’s Park Slope Collection Slides Into Reid’s Showrooms

Reid’s Fine Furnishings is pleased to welcome Stickley’s new Park Slope Collection to its showrooms.

The fresh, versatile collection of furniture was created by Marissa Brown, Stickley’s new Director of Product Design. Combining organic curves with Arts & Crafts forms, Park Slope is a hybrid of styles, equally at home in both mission or modern surroundings.

The centerpiece of the collection is the platform bed, featuring tapered columns and square spindles which are paired with a curved sculptured rail recalling mid-century Scandinavian designs. This bold combination of elements works holistically to create a harmonious design, with the platform and headboard giving the bed a presence without dominating the room’s environment.

The Park Slope Collection consists of 21 new offerings for the bedroom, dining room and living room, with tables, display case, buffet and chairs. All pieces are available in solid, quartersawn white oak or cherry, as well as the full selection of Stickley finishes.

The collection is available for pre-order.

Reid’s Thanks You for Our First 23 Years

SHARE THIS:

In 1995, we opened Reid’s Fine Furnishings in Roanoke’s historic Grandin Village as a family-owned, high-end furniture retailer with a passion for our community.

Twenty-three years later, we continue to live out that vision, offering furniture, lighting, rugs, interior design and home décor accessories from our showrooms in Roanoke and our second location in Forest.

Our connection with the community has grown throughout the years as we’ve supported institutions such as The Jefferson Center and The Grandin Theatre, provided scholarships to Virginia Tech students doing cancer research, and donated funds to various local charities through the Ekornes Furniture Annual Charity promotion — an event that contributes based on the generosity of our customers.

Speaking of customers, the past 23 years would not have been possible without all of you. Your continued support of Reid’s has enabled us to keep doing what we love in a community we love. We appreciate you entrusting us to help furnish and design your homes and offices and cherish the friendships we’ve formed with so many of you.

For all that you’ve meant to the Reid’s family, thank you for the first 23 years. Here’s to the next 23!

Choosing to Be Charitable

Being an active part of the community is an important part of Reid’s Fine Furnishings’ philosophy as a business.

We take pleasure in giving back and consider it an honor to be able to help others.

An example of this spirit of philanthropy can be seen in our involvement with the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM) and Research Institute in Roanoke. We recently provided a “Stressless seating” area to the school, donating two Stressless sofas for students to relax in during their downtime.

“The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine does great things for our community,” said Reid’s owner Bill Waide. “We need to support it and this was one way to show that — by providing a comfortable space for these hard-at-work students to study or relax.”

Owner Andrea Reid Waide echoed those sentiments, saying, “It is important to us at Reid’s to give back to the local community.”

The partnership with VTCSOM began after Reid’s sponsored an event for the institution at Rockledge, a local event venue. The Waides also have a relationship with Lynne Pearo, VTCSOM director of alumni relations and special events.

The donation is just one of the ways Reid’s has given back to the community. They donated furniture for The Grandin Theatre to use in its foyer as part of its renovation project. Reid’s has also hosted fundraisers for and made donations to the Jefferson Center.

Each holiday season, Reid’s Fine Furnishings hosts the Charity of Choice sale event. For a $50 donation, customers receive $400 off their purchase of select Ekornes Stressless recliners or $200 off their purchase of other Stressless furnishings.

Last year, Reid’s expanded their philanthropic effort to impact charities in both Roanoke and Forest, where its stores are located. Donations made in Roanoke went to the Bradley Free Clinic, while those made in Forest benefited Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest

High Point Market Highlights (2018)

The Reid’s Fine Furnishings team made the trip to High Point, North Carolina in April for the 2018 Spring High Point Furniture Market

While there, we stocked up on design ideas and invested in new inventory that is sure to turn heads! We also selected a few one-of-a-kind antiques, including pieces from France and Germany.

These new items should be arriving to our showroom in late June.

Our takeaways from this season’s High Point Furniture Market adventure:

  • The addition of the Tomlinson line which specializes is high end contemporary upholstered furnishings.
  • The addition of new lighting sources, as well as the expansion of existing lighting collections.
  • Stickley has returned to their roots with Mission furniture, which we’re excited to see! The company has added many downsized Mission pieces for smaller spaces.
  • Our love affair with Vladimir Kagan continues. Obviously.

Getting the blues in the best way

One could accuse us of getting the summertime blues at High Point Furniture Market. But who could blame us?! There were a lot of blues featured at the spring show, and big, bold hues in the royal and cobalt families are huge this year. Greens of all shades and bright citron hues also made their mark in everything from paint colors and wallpaper to artwork and upholstery.

We look forward to showing you what we discovered at the spring High Point Market and are already eagerly anticipating the fall show in October!

Incorporating the 2018 Color of the Year Into Your Décor

SHARE THIS:

Pantone recently announced that the 2018 Color of the Year is Ultra Violet.

This deep shade of purple can make a bold statement in any room, but many people fear it can be overpowering if used incorrectly. Our interior designer Lia Serapiglia has some suggestions to help you incorporate this color into your décor without overdoing it.

“Throw pillows, floral arrangements, and artwork are all ways to incorporate the 2018 Color of the Year without having to do a complete overhaul of your room,” said Lia. “Purple is a bold and regal color, so try pairing it with gold accents for a rich look.”

Other ways to integrate the Color of the Year into your interior décor include putting Ultra Violet candles or light fixtures on your end tables.

If you’re feeling bold and really want to make a statement, go big with your decoration choices. Paint an accent wall this shade of purple or add a deep purple rug to your room. These updates are great choices for a child’s bedroom or cozy den.

As Lia shares, going all out with new furniture is the ultimate way to embrace this color choice.

“For those who would like to be a bit more daring, a purple velvet tufted loveseat or sofa would be a dramatic statement piece,” said Lia. “Pair it with solid chairs in a neutral color to really make the purple pop.

“Hanging long drapes in this color is another great way to incorporate this color into your home.”

Stickely Gallery and Product Updates Inspires

Stickley is working with retailers to help them showcase its various products and styles.

In a recent article by Furniture Today, the top-end manufacturer said it will focus on displaying styles ranging from mid-century to traditional in the same space. In addition to furniture, Stickley also wants to display rugs, accents and wall art.

“This is a large presentation of tried-and-true goods mixed with new products,” CEO Aminy Audi told the publication. “We’re doing things like showing Mission products that have remained successful for years in new finishes for appeal to a different customer.”

Stickley is also making modern updates to tried-and-true pieces. One of the new beds, for example, has storage drawers on both sides. Previous Stickley beds have included some storage, but “there’s a dresser’s worth of storage on this bed,” Audi said, which acknowledges and accommodates the many Stickley customers living in smaller spaces.

By displaying these various products together, retailers such as Reid’s are able to show how these different styles can be combined to create a unique look in any room. It’s also an opportunity to show how new items can pair with existing pieces customers may have.

Reid’s is proud to offer Stickley’s high-end products and excited to showcase its various styles. To see which Stickley products Reid’s is currently showcasing, visit our showroom in Roanoke or go to our Forest location.

Deck Your Home for the Holidays

Does flipping through magazines gives you holiday decor envy?

Our interior designers have a few tips that will help you decorate for the holidays like a pro.

Choose a Theme

Think about how you celebrate the holidays and choose a color scheme. If you’re the traditional type, a classic red, green, and gold color scheme is a good place to start. Like to host fancy-dress cocktail parties? A sophisticated metallic color pallette will set the right tone. Famous for your no-holds-barred New Year’s bash? You might like a funky riff on classic holiday colors like metallic magenta and electric green.

Having a loose theme and a color story for your holiday decorations in mind will help you focus when you’re thumbing through design magazines and searching the internet for inspiration. We’ve put together a few Pinterest boards to get you started.

It’s Easy Being Green

If you get tired of seeing poinsettias everywhere during the holidays, you’re not alone. But plants are a simple and inexpensive element to add to your holiday décor, no matter what theme or color story you choose. Pine boughs look beautiful draped on a mantel or around doorways, and individually potted rosemary plants work well as centerpieces and side-table accents.

Don’t Over-Decorate

It’s easy to get carried away when decorating for the holidays, but resist the temptation to turn your entire home into a Christmas card. Plan your décor strategically, placing the most importance on the entryway and the focal points of the primary entertaining spaces. Add small flourishes to less-frequently visited rooms like the guest bath.

Let There Be Light

Lighting is an important design element that’s often overlooked. Kill the overhead lights and use an indirect light source. Uplights are great for highlight artwork and key décor vignettes, and they reflect off the walls to create a welcoming glow. You can also incorporate LED candles into your decorations on tables and shelves to create a cozy feeling in the space.

By mixing brass with other metals, you can buck the “everything has to match” trend and make your home feel more lived in and inviting.

New Look for Wood Furniture

Step away from the traditional brown color and liven up your home with grey, sand or beige colored wood furniture and fixtures that are now in our showroom.

Lots of Artwork

From paintings to furniture, art was everywhere at this year’s market. Many pieces currently in our showroom feature bright colors that have been mixed with greys and whites.

Charleston Forge

Sofas, armchairs, coffee tables, end tables…is there anything Charleston Forge can’t do well? We invested in some beautiful sets from this manufacturer that are already in our showroom.

Motion Sofas and Recliners

Furniture with electric controls was particularly popular at this season’s market. You’ll be able to lean back and relax with a number of stylish options that we’ll soon be adding to our showroom floor.

Gat Creek

We’ll be adding a variety of new furniture from Gat Creek soon, which is good news for anyone looking to capture classic American style.
