Reid’s Fine Furnishings is proud to announce it has been awarded Gold in the Best Furniture Store category by readers of The Roanoker in the magazine’s Best of Roanoke 2017 contest.

“It’s wonderful to see so many local businesses and organizations honored for their part in making Roanoke a great place to live,” said Reid’s owner Andrea Waide.

Waide and the rest of the employees of Reid’s are always delighted when the store receives recognition for providing quality furniture and customer service to the residents of Roanoke. Receiving Gold in the Best of Roanoke — an award decided by the people of Roanoke –— is “especially rewarding since it comes directly from the people who shop with us,” she added.

About the Award

The Best of Roanoke is an annual contest hosted by The Roanoker. Readers of the magazine vote for their favorite person, business or organization in a variety of different categories. This year, there were 158 categories for readers to vote on that ranged from “TV Person You Rely on Most” to “Best Craft Beer Brewery.”

This year’s top award winners include: Grandin Theatre for “Best Movie Theater,” Zack Jackson of K92 for “Most Fun on the Radio (Personality)” and Ed Walker for “Most Brilliant Mind.”

Reid’s Fine Furnishings would like to thank everyone who voted for the store and took part in the voting. For the full list of winners, visit http://theroanoker.com/best/best-of-roanoke-2017/.

Creating a Comfortable Home Office

SHARE THIS:

It seems that more people than ever before now have a home office. But while many people focus on aesthetic style when designing their space, it’s also important to create an environment that’s comfortable and distraction-free.

Reid’s Fine Furnishings has a wide selection of home office furniture to fit your tastes and needs.

Here are some tips to help you create a functional, comfortable home office.

Choosing a Chair

The chair in your home office should be functional and comfortable since you will be spending several hours a day sitting. Lumbar support and height-adjustment features are essential, and a rotating base with wheels will allow you to move around easily.

Modern, minimalist designs are a top choice for most people buying home office furniture at Reid’s. To add warmth and sophistication, we suggest choosing a chair model made of wood, leather or other natural materials.

Picking the Right Desk

Remember size, form and function when choosing your desk. Choose a desk that’s the right height for your body and the right width and depth for your needs. The optimum distance from your eyes to your computer monitor is 16-30 inches.

Resist the urge to decorate with accessories clutter your work surface.

Working in the Sun

Natural light regulates circadian rhythm and has been proven to make people more productive. Position your desk in a place where you can get plenty of sunlight throughout the day.

One downside to natural light is the glare it causes on a computer screen, which can lead to eye strain. We suggest positioning your desk perpendicular to windows so you still enjoy the sunlight without a glare on your screen.

Like the rest of your home, your home office should be stylish and make you feel comfortable. The associates at Reid’s Fine Furnishings can help you choose office furniture that matches your tastes and fit your needs. Browse our online showroom or visit one of our showroom locations in Roanoke or Forest to see our selection of home office furniture.

Finding the perfect mattress is the first step toward getting a luxurious night’s sleep, but the selection of mattress types and sizes can sometimes be overwhelming for customers.

We’ve compiled this list to help you find the right mattress to fit your needs.

Do Your Homework

Determine what size and type of mattress you need. If you remember getting a good night’s sleep at a hotel or friend’s house, try to remember the size of the mattress and if it was soft or firm.

Determine a Budget

Mattresses can have a wide range of prices. Make sure you have a budget in mind before you come in and find a mattress you love, only to be discouraged because it is out of your price range.

Ask an Expert for Help

The associates at Reid’s Fine Furnishings are friendly and knowledgeable when it comes to mattresses. Describe what you’re looking for and they can make the right suggestions.

Try it out!

If you think you’ve found the right mattress, kick off your shoes and lie down in multiple positions to make sure it meets your needs. If it’s not the right feel for you, try out another mattress until you find the perfect one. We suggest wearing comfortable clothing when you’re mattress shopping so you can get a true feel for the bed.

Reid’s Custom Mattress Collection has options for every kind of sleeper. From firm to soft, you’ll find the comfort you need with the luxury you deserve. With a 15-year non pro-rated warranty, you can sleep well knowing you’ll have a comfortable mattress for years to come. Visit our showrooms in Roanoke and Forest to find the right mattress for you.

Hold Lasting Value With Stickley Furniture

SHARE THIS:

Think of the items you’ve purchased recently. How many of them will be more valuable in 100 years than they are today? How many can be passed down through the generations as “tomorrow’s antiques?”

Reid’s Fine Furnishings proudly carries collections from some of the world’s best furniture makers, including Stickley.

Founded by a group of brothers in 1900, Stickley Furniture began with an old Flemish craftsman’s phrase — Als Ik Kan — “to the best of my ability.” Gustav Stickley, one of the founders, marked his product with the saying as his personal guarantee that Stickley furniture was crafted from the highest-quality materials with honor, integrity, and pride.

These three words have been the guiding mantra of Stickley ever since. Even today, 116 years later, Stickley furnishings still feature solid construction, what-you-see-is-what-you-get joinery, and the finest woods available, finished with clear dyes that allow the natural grain to sparkle.

It’s these unique, handcrafted practices and time-honored techniques that make Stickley an important figure in the history of our nation’s furniture. You’ll find Stickley pieces in some of America’s most renowned museums, including:

The Stickley Company even founded its own museum — The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms — dedicated to showcasing how their furnishings have impacted the American way of life.

At Reid’s, we believe in the value of thoughtful, handcrafted pieces. With Stickley Furniture, you can share your investment as antiques you pass along to your grandchildren.

Reid’s Fall 2016 Market Report

SHARE THIS:

We’re well into the fall now, and the Reid’s team has returned from the 2016 High Point Fall Furniture Market with some exciting new trends to share with you.

Blues! (and Some Grays)

Gray was a big color story at the Spring 2016 market, and while it’s still a key player in fall color pallets, blues are starting to share the spotlight. We saw a variety of blue tones — ranging from soft dewy mist to saturated midnight navy — on leather, rugs, fabrics, artwork, lamps and more.

Mid-Century Modern

Mid-century modern style has been gaining popularity since the premiere of Mad Men in 2010. Furniture designers are responding with statement pieces inspired by the long, sleek lines and minimalist feel of popular styles from the 1930s to the 1960s, crafted in acrylic, hand-blown glass, marble, leather, and wood.

Artwork

From paintings and tapestries to sculptures and prints, art was everywhere at Market — in large-scale formats with colorful pallets and energetic movement.

Funky Lamps

Even if you have a neutral or minimalist design aesthetic, you’ll love all the fun and funky lamps we saw at market. These light fixtures will add the perfect pop of color and sprinkle of whimsy to any space you put them in.

Carved, Wooden Accessories

There’s nothing more organic than wood, until you carve them into animal form. Several of these interesting pieces will be hitting our showroom floor soon.

Port Eliot

We’ve always has a special place in our hearts for Port Eliot’s gorgeous European furnishings and Mid-Century Modern flair. We invested in some stunning pieces that will arrive in the showroom soon.

CR Laine

Simplicity is beautiful, and no one does it better than CR Laine. We adored their showroom at Market, so visit the showroom soon to see all the beautiful pieces we brought back to share with you, like this Transitional Sofa and Heath Chair in Barnsley Dusk fabric.

Is Your Favorite Furniture Causing Your Back Pain?

SHARE THIS:

Do you suffer from pain or stiffness in your neck, shoulders, mid or lower back? You’re not alone, and your favorite furniture could be to blame.

The American Chiropractic Association says that back pain is the second-most common reason for a visit to the doctor, and it’s the most frequent cause of activity limitations among working-age adults. Back pain is also the most expensive healthcare problem in this demographic.

Whether sitting at home or at the office, a neutral posture is ideal for mitigating and reducing problematic back pain. When seated, the feet should be flat on the floor, knees slightly higher than the hips and the head directly over the top of the shoulders. A neutral seated posture will also benefit your circulation and digestive health.

But many of us spend a large portion of each day sitting on furniture that doesn’t allow for that ideal neutral posture. A recent study revealed that professional-level workers spend 93% of their work day sitting in an office chair. And when you consider that we also do a lot of sitting at home on deep, soft couches, it’s not surprising that 85% of Americans experience back pain by age 50, and 85% of those people have it recurrently.

“The average furniture is made for a 5-foot-10-inch, 165-pound male; however, only 2% of the population fits that baseline,” said Scott Bautch, DC, DACBOH, president of the ACA Council on Occupational Health. “Good furniture with an ergonomic feel that fits a larger part of the population with different posture types and needs is essential.”

The Ekornes Stressless furniture collection, which includes sofas, recliners, and office chairs, is ergonomically designed to reduce back pain, and it’s endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association. Recliners are available in small, medium, and large sizes to accommodate a range of body compositions.

Stressless seating is also equipped with patented comfort technologies for lumbar, back and neck support. Its newest technology is the BalanceAdapt™ system, which gives select Stressless recliners a slight back-and-forth motion simulating buoyancy. Another important feature is the patented Plus™ system, which articulates with the body’s contour for the ideal lower back and head support in an upright or reclined position.

The Waides invite you to visit our furniture showrooms in Roanoke or Forest and let us help you find your new favorite furnishings.

Spring Market Report (2016)

SHARE THIS:

The Reid’s team recently returned from the 2016 High Point Spring Furniture Market, the largest furnishings industry trade show in the world.

Over the course of a few days, we visited with representatives in about 30 different showrooms (there were thousands set up!) to seek out new trends, designs, furniture pieces and inspiration.

We can’t wait to go back again in the fall, but we wanted to share what we discovered with you.

Gray, Gray, Gray … and Even More Gray

From furniture to fabrics, the graying of the palette was apparent throughout Market this year.

No matter your price point or pigment preference, you can find furnishings and fabrics in countless shades of gray — from light, near-whites to deep gunmetal hues. We’ve been saying this for a while now, and the spring market confirmed it — gray is the new neutral.

Small Is Big

With many Americans downsizing and embracing the “tiny house” trend, furniture manufacturers are starting to think smaller.

Nearly every showroom we visited had one or more pieces that told a space efficiency story. And the aesthetics are streamlining, too, moving towards cleaner silhouettes with less ornate detailing.

One-of-a-Kind Finds

Some of our most exciting finds at Market were one-of-a-kind antique accessories. We feel that accessories tell the stories of a person’s life, and there’s a value to special, signature pieces you won’t find in anyone else’s décor.

As High Point Market eloquently put it, “if you can’t find it at High Point, it probably doesn’t exist.”

Transitional Vibes

Blending traditional and contemporary styles has been an emerging trend for some time, but transitional décor, as it’s called, is finally finding its way.

This combination style incorporates lines that are less ornate than traditional designs, but not as severely basic as contemporary lines. As a result, transitional furniture designs are classic, timeless and clean, yet still warm, welcoming and comfortable.

Acrylic Possibilities

Acrylic furniture, also known as Lucite furniture, has been around since the 1930s and enjoyed a heyday in the 1960s. Today, it’s often associated with the Hollywood Regency style, but as we learned at Market, acrylic furniture is finding its way into all kinds of décor.

Trending designers are now pairing this chic material with metals and natural woods. And thanks to its unique durability, acrylic is well-suited for a variety of furniture and accessory designs, including bed framing, tables, chairs, desks, light fixtures, and even drawer pulls. We brought home a stunning beverage cart made entirely of acrylic, which you can see in person in our Roanoke showroom, located in Grandin Village.
