Do you flip through the pages of Architectural Digest, swoon over the stunning rooms, and resign yourself to the notion that your home will never look that good?

You’re not alone.

We’ll be the first to tell you that there are thousands of hours, great lighting, and clever staging that go into designing an interior for a magazine shoot. Those setups aren’t necessarily well-suited for day-to-day living, either.

But your home can look beautifully put-together, and accommodate your lifestyle, with a little help from an interior designer. We know, it sounds like a huge undertaking befitting an HGTV show, but interior design is not as complicated (or expensive) as television can make it seem.

Before we get into the specifics of designing your dream interior, let’s go through a few questions so we can get to know you and your space.

  1. What type of surroundings make you happy?
  2. Do you respond to neat and organized or lots of accessories?
  3. Which is your favorite room in the house (or your least favorite)?
  4. Where do you feel most at home — in the city, the suburbs, the country, at the lake, or up in the mountains?
  5. How much time, energy, and money are you willing to spend right now on the style you want to achieve?
  6. How do the people who inspire you live — simply and quietly, surrounded by family, or traveling the world?
  7. Do you have a favorite piece of furniture or art or collectible that you can’t live without?
  8. If you could change one thing about the furnishings in your home, what would it be?
  9. Where would you take a dream vacation? Would you create a similar atmosphere at home?
  10. Does your decorating dream correspond to your lifestyle?

The way you answer these questions will help us get a sense of your personal style and your interior design preferences. You don’t have to write down your answers, but we encourage it!

Decluttering and Organizing Your Home — The KonMari Method

Now that Spring has finally arrived, you’re probably chomping at the bit to declutter and organize your home. But where to start? And how to decide what to part with?

The KonMari Method is trending, largely because of its focus on parting with anything that doesn’t “spark joy.” The real beauty of the KonMari Method is that it forces you to consider what you truly love and want, and stop collecting things you only think you need. Quality over quantity, if you will. This way of thinking also trickles over into your shopping habits, which will help you chose items of higher quality that stand the test of time and offer a better return on investment.

It might be difficult to decide what “sparks joy” when you first start the KonMari process, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be putting everything that doesn’t put a huge smile on your face or recall a pleasant memory in the donate bin.

Getting Started

If you’re like most people, you have a lot of stuff, so it can be difficult to decide how to start your decluttering process. The KonMari Method recommends working by category, such as shoes, clothes, or reading material, rather than in a particular room.

Clothes

Empty your closet and drawers. (You can do this by room/person to make it easier to manage.) Examine each item, one at a time. Keep basic items that are in good condition, such as solid t-shirts or layering tanks. If you pick up an item and you can’t recall when you last wore it, put it in the donate pile. Make an exception for timeless, high-end, or special occasion items, but part with anything that doesn’t fit, flatter, or “spark joy.”

This can take a while, especially if your closet is overflowing, so enlist the help of a friend and a nice bottle of wine.

Shoes

If your shoe collection rivals Imelda Marcos’, this is going to be a challenge. Line up every pair and look them over carefully. If you haven’t worn them in years, donate them. If they’re badly worn or beyond the services of a good cobbler, toss them. Try on all the remaining pairs and walk around in them. If they’re uncomfortable, they go. Again, make an exception for timeless and special occasion styles, but only if you really love them and will actually wear them.

Paperwork and Reading Material

Your home office is probably chock-full of paperwork you never reference. Create a digital filing system and scan anything you need to keep for your records. Then shred and recycle the originals. Review your magazines and books. Anything you don’t regularly reference or re-read can be donated to a local literacy group. First or special editions and signed copies can stay, of course, if they “spark joy.” 

Furniture, Art, and Accessories

You can apply the KonMari method to your home furnishings, art, and accessories, too! Examine your furniture for wear and tear. Reupholster quality pieces. Discard tired, flat pillows or those that Fluffy turned into a chew toy. Clean or replace stained or worn rugs. Consider your artwork — do you love it? Does it complement your décor?

Donate anything you don’t love but will be useful for someone else.

Reid’s Provides Final Touches to Grandin Theatre Renovation

In late April, the historic Grandin Theatre completed a 10-week renovation giving the façade, entry way, box office, and lobby a new look.

The Grandin Theatre Foundation was able to remodel and restore the Theatre’s box office, double sets of doors, adjoining windows and marble footers, and re-roof the marquee. The Foundation was also able to add functionality to the new doors to give patrons with disabilities easier access to and from the facility. Despite all the wonderful upgrades, something was still missing.

Reid’s Fine Furnishings, a Grandin Village neighbor since 1995, knew they could help make the Theatre even better. Owners Bill and Andrea Waide donated benches and tables to give the lobby a new, but familiar, look. The furniture was hand-picked by the Waides to refresh the space with the classic Reid’s twist, while keeping the theatre’s original vibe intact.

“In traditional Grandin Village style, we reached out to Bill and Andrea Waide of Reid’s and invited them down to do a walk-through,” said Grandin Theatre Foundation Executive Director Ian Fortier. “Bill and Andrea are great assets to the Grandin Village and two of the biggest supporters of this historic Theatre. From their very first visit, it was evident that they wanted to be a part of refurnishing the lobby. We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the contributions they made to the Theatre’s improvement,” said Fortier.

Built in 1932, the Grandin Theatre is the last remaining historic independent cinema house in the Roanoke Valley.

Reid’s Fine Furnishing Store Adds Interior Director

Bill and Andrea Waide are proud to announce a new addition to the Reid’s Fine Furnishings family of interior professionals.

Steve Parker brings his life-long love of interior design, art, and retail sales to his new position as Interior Director. Parker will be responsible for creating beautiful vignettes that highlight the furniture, art and accessories in the Reid’s Fine Furnishings showrooms located in the Historic Grandin Village in Roanoke and at Forest Square in Forest. He’ll also be working with Reid’s clients to design and outfit the spaces in their homes.

“Steve’s experience in art sales and framing, retail sales, store management and merchandising, and interior design services made him an ideal candidate for this position. We’re really pleased he’s part of our team,” said Andrea Reid Waide, Owner of Reid’s Fine Furnishings.

Parker graduated from the University of Richmond with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and has completed professional training in sales, marketing, and design. In addition to focusing his career on the decorative arts, Parker has volunteered with non-profit organizations supporting and promoting creative individuals and their fine crafts. Parker was raised in Hampton, Virginia, and most recently moved to Roanoke from Asheville, North Carolina.

Add Extra Seating with Stickely

Set the Perfect Thanksgiving Table

Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving for the first time, or your house is the holiday hot spot every year, these tips will help you set the perfect table for your feast.

Choose a theme.

A theme will help you focus on elements that will enhance your table without taking away from the experience you’re trying to create. For example, if your theme is “shine,” you might opt for metallic accents sprinkled throughout the tablescape, such as gold or silver napkin holders or spray-painted gourd clusters for centerpieces.

Add elegant touches.

Chargers are special oversized plates that sit beneath dining plates. As each course is cleared, the charger remains on the table awaiting the next dish. Chargers also serve as protection for your table cloth, and can be used with or without placemats. Another elegant touch is a specially folded napkin. You don’t need a fancy swan, simply fold your napkins into a pocket shape where you can place utensils or a menu.

Create height, without obstructing the view.

Tall candle holders or glass vases with metallic branches are an ideal way to add height to your Thanksgiving table, just make sure the placement doesn’t interfere with your guests’ conversations.

Don’t forget the kids!

If you have enough children in your family to have a kids table, make it a fun place for them to be. Include trivia place cards or small games they can entertain themselves with.

Reid’s Receives Stickley Award

Andrea and Bill believe in the value of fine, handcrafted furnishings. They see these pieces as an investment to be passed down through the generations.

That’s why we carry collections from some of the world’s best furniture makers, including the Stickley brand.

Stickley Furniture has been in operation since 1900. The brand was started by a group of brothers in the spirit of an old Flemish craftsman’s phrase Als Ik Kan, which translates to “to the best of my ability.” Gustav Stickley, the company’s first furniture designer and maker, marked his pieces with the phrase to assure customers that Stickley furniture was of the finest quality — every piece made with honor, integrity, and pride.

Their first pieces used solid construction, what-you-see-is-what-you-get joinery, and the highest quality woods available. Finishes were not thick gums, but clear dyes that allowed natural grain to sparkle. It’s that commitment to quality that resulted in beautiful, practical, and exceedingly strong and long-lasting furnishings. And the company continues these founding practices to this day, 117 years later.

Recently, at their annual Dealer Weekend event, the L & J.G. Stickley company honored Reid’s Fine Furnishings as a Champion of Per Capita Sales. This means we’ve shared our love of the Stickley brand with the highest population percentage of any Stickley dealer anywhere.

Celebrating 20 Years of Fine Furniture in Roanoke

This week marks a special occasion in the history of Reid’s Fine Furnishings — our 20th anniversary. Sometimes, it seems like a lifetime ago that Bill and I were on our way to dinner at Norberto’s when we passed an empty storefront in Grandin Village.

We begged the building’s owner to show us the space that night, and immediately signed the lease that would begin our legacy. Other times, we wonder where the time has gone! We’ve been having so much fun, the last 20 years have just flown by.

As we celebrate 20 years in business, we also celebrate the people who helped make Reid’s the fine furniture destination Roanoke deserves. Most of the people on our team have been with us for more than a decade. We’ve also had the privilege of having front-row seats to the revitalization of the Grandin Village community, and we couldn’t be more grateful to have played a small part in it.

We’re also delighted to be celebrating the opening of our second showroom in Forest, so we can bring tomorrow’s antiques to the Lynchburg area.

Though we’ve been at this for a while now, we have no intention of getting stale! We’ll continue to add exciting new furniture designs to our collections and bring you accessories and lighting that you can’t live without. When your children and grandchildren are outfitting their new homes, you’ll know just where to send them for the best interior design advice in Virginia.

Reid’s has opened a second showroom to serve the needs of our customers in the Lynchburg and Forest metro areas.

Our new 5,200 square-foot store is located at 14805 Forest Road in Suite 101 in Forest, Virginia.

What Hue Are You?

Color is the decorating glue that holds your home together. A beautiful color scheme can make your whole house seem well planned and organized.

Even though color plays an important role in the way your home looks and feels, there are no hard and fast rules about finding the right palette. Color choices are personal. Start with what you love.

Deciding on a scheme doesn’t have to be overwhelming. There are ways to find colors that please you, make you happy or energize you. Just about anything can serve as inspiration.

Where to start? Look at a piece of fabric or rug that you’ve always wanted to use. Choose your primary color with that in mind.

Paint is an inexpensive and simple way to change the whole atmosphere of your home. Ask yourself: what’s your favorite color? How do you react to color? How do you want this space to feel? How much light is there in the space?

Color cues can come from just about anywhere. With all of this in mind, don’t be afraid of color!
